The Groom Cross, the Largest in the Western Hemisphere

The light from the sky “awakened” me around 630 am – I realized that my phone alarm didn’t set off.  I checked and found out that it was on but it would beep within 24 hours – that meant in the following day.  I must have been so tired from driving all night long.  I looked at where the sunrise came up.  It was already there.  I got out of my sleeping bag.  Oh boy! It was freezing inside the car – my glasses were cold!  I turned the heat on while I was getting ready to get out with camera in hand, put my jacket on and my beloved flip-flops. I checked the temperature.  It was 45 degrees outside.  I wasn’t bringing some socks along.  I just forgot. I waited until I got warmed up.  I got out from the car and started getting busy clicking the cross during the sunrise still glistening.

“If you want to be reminded of the love, just watch the sunrise.”

The Groom Cross was built by Steve Thomas in 1995. Mr. Thomas, disgusted with the huge billboards advertising XXX pornography locations along I-40 wanted to make a public profession of faith along the Interstate. He was inspired by a cross built by a rancher in Ballinger, Texas. Mr. Thomas knew that he would build a cross so it was built on private property donated by Chris Britten to avoid legal issues with the ACLU at a height of 190 feet, the Groom Cross is reported as being the biggest cross in the northern hemisphere.

The Cross is a knee-bending 190 feet tall and 110 feet wide. This is the 2nd largest Cross in the Western Hemisphere.

I stayed for about 45 minutes and went on to take some snapshots of the Leaning Water Tank Tower that is not far away from the Cross.

Off to The Britten Leaning Water Tower, just two exits away….
